The Hvalsey Conference 2008

A conference held in Qaqortoq, Greenland with field trips to the Hvalsey Fjord farm and church, Brattahlíð and Garðar
12. – 18. September 2008 (preliminary).

In 1408, on the Sunday after exaltation of the Cross (Exaltatio S. Crucis), Sigríður Björnsdóttir and Þorsteinn Ólafsson were married in Hvalsey Fjord Church in the Norse Eastern Settlement in South Greenland. The exaltation of the Cross always falls on September 14th in 1408 the following Sunday was September 16th.

Documents testifying to this event were later drawn up in Iceland, containing the last written evidence for life in the Norse settlement in Greenland.

In 2008 we will celebrate the 600 years’ anniversary of the wedding in Hvalsey. We want to mark this with a seven-day conference in Qaqortoq in the heart of the Norse Eastern Settlement and with field trips to Erik the Red’s Brattahlið, the bishop’s see Garðar and, of course to the remarkably well preserved ruins at Qaqortukulooq, which is the modern Greenlandic name for the site of the medieval Hvalsey fjord farm and church.

Session themes
With reference to the Hvalsey Fjord site the proposed sessions for the symposium will be:
